They might look like pine trees and cacti on steroids, but they're actually cell phone towers disguised as trees.
Rising cell phone usage requires massive cell towers, but no one wants to see their bare skeletons. In addition, many residents believe that living, working or going to school near cell phone towers may increase the risk of cancer or other health problems. That's why telecommunications companies have come up with the ingenious idea of using camouflaged towers that look like trees, flagpoles, water tanks or church towers.
For seven years, Robert Voit traveled the world photographing these strange trees—including false pines, palms, and cactus in Arizona. So take a good look at these photos and make sure you don't try to cut them out one day.
